INDIA ABROAD A Subodh Gupta Exhibition

Bose Pacia Modern, a gallery in SoHo in Manhattan that focuses on contemporary Indian art, is showing the works of the emerging Indian artist Subodh Gupta.

Gupta is the winner of the Pacia gallery's first annual Emerging Artist of India award - for which, according to gallery partner Deepak Talwar, a large number of entries were received from all over India.

Besides this annual event, the gallery is seeking to provide an opportunity for the winning artist each year to come to New York and interact with the international art scene her during an early and formative stage of his or her career. For this purpose the gallery is host for an extended stay for Gupta in New York.

Two exhibitions of work by foreign-born artists which opened last week, one Indian, the other Russian, feature artwork created within a distinctly Western contemporary art format. Subodh Gupta of New Delhi combines painting with installation, which allows him to create assemblages of images that seem partly foreign and partly universal.

The question of how artists from former Communist countries or developing nations come to grips with Western modernism and Post-modernism is an interesting one. India remained largely apart from developments in modernism in the visual arts, and Russia, which pioneered many of these very developments up until 1920, was subsequently shut off from the West for several generations of artists.

From the perspective of an ambitious artist anywhere in the world, what we call Western art is the only game in town. Attempts to revive traditional or vernacular art styles such as Persian miniatures or Japanese wood block prints simply become gimmicks to add to the international Post-modern stew. Art done outside this context can't shake its status as Outsider Art in the West - not the rubric within which most artists with international ambitions want their work to be classified

INDIA WEST Artist Subodh Gupta Wins Bose Pacia Gallery Award

The Bose Pacia Modern gallery, here in New York, which will present an exhibition of New Delhi artist Subodh Gupta entitled "Twenty-nine Mornings: Subodh Gupta - Recent Paintings and Installation," May 22 through June 26, has announced that Gupta is the winner of its first annual "Emerging Artist of India" award.

According to a press release, Bose Pacia Modern felt it was critical to begin introducing emerging new talent from India to the international art community. In addition, the gallery wanted to provide an opportunity for an emerging Indian artist to interact with the international at scene in New York during the early and formative stages of his career.

INDIA POST Subodh Gupta Wins Emerging Artist Award

The Bose Pacia Modern gallery, featuring works of contemporary Indian artists, has declared Subodh Gupta the winner of its first annual "Emerging Artist of India" award.

Subodh's work center around references to traditional and contemporary iconography. "Pirhas" or small wooden stools, which are used throughout India as part of routine activities from bathing to praying, are used to evoke the essence of India.

Encouraged by the increasing attention being paid to Indian contemporary art, the gallery felt it was critical to begin introducing emerging talent from India to the international community. In addition, the gallery wanted to provide an opportunity for an emerging Indian artist to interact with the international at scene in New York at an early stage of the artist's career.
